MFA: Configure access to e-mail

TU Delft is dealing with cyber threats and hacking attempts almost every day, and recently the numbers of threats and attempts are rising. To keep your data and that of TU Delft safe, the executive board has decided to implement MFA to strengthen the security on e-mail. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an effective way to increase security for applications. In addition to a username and password, MFA also requires a security code to log in. It requires one (quick) extra action that significantly increases information security. The National Cyber Security Center of the Ministry of Justice and Security also advises to use MFA as much as possible to prevent unauthorized access. Read more about this change on Intranet and on Student News.

Set up MFA

Check if you have already set up a MFA method, you can do this on the Security Info page of your Microsoft account. On this page you can see which verification methods are available and activated for you. We recommend that you use Microsoft Authenticator as a verification method, but you can also choose from other options, such as SMS. If no method has been set up yet, you can do that right away. If you need help with this, please contact the Servicedesk.

In the manuals we recommend that you use Microsoft Authenticator as a verification method, but you can also choose from other options, such as SMS.

Use eduvpn to access functional mailboxes/IMAP

Do you use a functional mailbox or have you set up your own e-mail program with IMAP? You can only connect to your email through eduVPN while being off-campus.

Email history on your mobile device

From 19 July onwards, MFA is required to access your email that is stored on the TU Delft email servers. Due to this change only 30 days of email history can be retrieved when using Outlook on your mobile device (iOS or Android). It is important to mention that your email is not gone, but it is just not loaded into the email app you are using. All mail can be found via the search function in the app, Webmail or Outlook on PC.
