ERC grantees at TU Delft

Celebrating TU Delft’s ERC grantees

Since the establishment of the European Research Council (ERC) in 2007, TU Delft researchers have been very successful in securing ERC grants. Check the overview of grantees below.

Curiosity-driven, fundamental science is the basis for innovation. Today’s blue sky thinking may inspire tomorrow’s applications and solutions. Moreover, to ensure we will be able to solve tomorrow’s problems and supply tomorrow’s needs, we have to keep working today on our fundamental understanding of the world. In the words of American Nobel prize winner George Smoot: “If we only did applied research, we would still be making better spears.” However, in our profit-driven society, funding for this kind of research, where results may take decades before they can be translated into economic benefits, has become increasingly hard to come by. Here, the European Research Council is the proverbial exception that proves the rule, funding investigator-driven research at the frontiers of science and technology.

Researchers at TU Delft have been awarded grants in all available categories, including ERC Synergy. Within the ERC, the Netherlands ranks among the five main recipients, and in turn TU Delft ranks among the five main recipients within the Netherlands. This success is of course due to the merits of our researchers, excellence being the sole criterion for award. With this publication, we therefore celebrate both our researchers’ excellence, and the wisdom of the European Research Council in making this possible.
