Biography
After his BSc in Urban Planning and his research MSc in Urban Studies at the University of Amsterdam, Arend Jonkman obtained his PhD at the same university for his dissertation titled Distributive Justice of Housing in Amsterdam. The PhD-research is about the distributive justice as produced by housing policy and practice. How is housing distributed over groups of households and different parts of the city? And how can this distribution be evaluated in terms of different standards of distributive justice?
In 2018-2019 he worked as teacher and researcher Spatial Planning at Wageningen University & Research. The research project Grond voor wonen (Land for housing) investigated how Dutch municipalities applied different instruments of land policy to achieve (sometimes conflicting) housing objectives.
In his current role as postdoctoral researcher for the 1M Homes-initiative, interdisciplinary research—in collaboration with all four departments of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment—is conducted on the current housing crisis and possible solutions. The housing and urbanization challenge relates to several inherent values. It is not just about constructing as many dwellings as possible, but doing so in a sustainable, climate adaptive and inclusive manner. How can these different values be aligned and united through the use of new modes of governance, financing structures, production methods, housing concepts and designs?Expertise
