Biography
Carla Huisman is a sociologist who has studied the role of citizen participation in legitimising displacement and the precarisation of the Dutch rental housing market. Broadly speaking, her research interest is the relation between housing policy and social-spatial inequality. She obtained both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Amsterdam. Currently she is putting the last touches on her PhD thesis under supervision of Prof. Dr. Clara Mulder and Dr. Louise Meijering at the University of Groningen; it is entitled Insecure Tenure. Beyond her academic work, Carla is co-founding chair of Soweto, a small, new volunteer-run housing association that aims to create affordable, well-maintained and secure rental housing in Amsterdam. Since 2013 Carla is executive editor of Rooilijn, a mostly Dutch language magazine on science and policy in spatial planning.
