E.K. (Erik) Fritz

Profile

Biography

Erik obtained a bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master degree in Energy Engineering at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. During his master thesis he worked on the acceleration of vortex particle methods for simulating wind turbines.
After graduating, Erik joined the wind energy group of TNO as junior scientist. Since July 2020, he is pursuing his PhD as part of the TIADE project, a collaborative research effort between TNO, GE Renewable Energies and LM Wind Power ( Turbine Improvements for Additional Energy - Topsector Energie). Erik investigates the aeroelastic wind turbine blade behaviour in field conditions. This entails both field data analysis as well as comparisons to numerical simulation results.

Biography

Erik obtained both his Mechanical Engineering B.Sc. and his Energy Engineering M.Sc. at RWTH Aachen University in Germany. In 2019, he joined the wind energy group of TNO in Petten, Netherlands. Since 2020, he is pursuing his PhD in a research collaboration between TNO, GE Renewable Energy and LM Wind Power. In this project, various wind turbine blade improvements and add-ons are being developed and validated on a full-scale experimental turbine.
Erik’s research focusses on the analysis of the wind turbine blades’ aeroelastic behaviour in field conditions. Based on the analysis of data gathered from the experimental turbine it is planned to develop an aeroelastically tailored blade tip that will be tested in later stages of the project. The experimental data will further be used to validate numerical models and defining the limitations of different fidelity models in regard to accurately representing the aerodynamic and aeroelastic blade behaviour.
Promoter: Prof. Carlos Simao Ferreira (TU Delft) Daily Supervisor: Dr. Koen Boorsma (TNO)
