Dr.ir. I.W.M. (Ivo) Pothof

Mr. Ivo Pothof (PhD, MSc, 1972) is part-time associate professor Smart Thermal Grids at Delft University of Technology and chair of the  TU Delft Thermal Energy Platform. At Deltares, he manages the Deltares portfolio on Renewable Energy and Energy-efficiency. He identifies innovations and has initiated multiple strategic R&D projects in the cross-over between water, renewable energy and smart control of water and energy infrastructure. Recent examples are listed in the Projects section. Ivo Pothof wants to contribute to the development of 4th generation district heating grids (4GDH) and their integration in future smart energy systems.

Other recent projects that contribute to a fossil free future energy system:

Mr. Pothof is member of the Heating/cooling council ("Programmaraad Warmte/Koude") of the Province Zuid-Holland. He was a member of the Scientific Council of Deltares from 2013 until 2016 and a member of the LOC of the 36th IAHR World Congress in The Hague in 2015. Mr. Pothof has a background as an industrial hydrodynamics specialist at Deltares. Joining Delft Hydraulics (currently Deltares) in 1997, he became specialist in fluid transients, optimal control of pipeline systems and air-water pipe flows. His book chapter on transients in water supply systems has been downloaded over 25,000 times worldwide. He performed projects for the water industry, energy companies and oil and gas industry. His PhD thesis on air-water flows in downward sloping pipes is directly applicable to (waste)water, cooling water and hydropower outlet works. The technical guideline on design and operation of wastewater mains, derived from Pothof’s PhD thesis, has become the de-facto standard in the Netherlands and has been issued as an IWA publication. Ivo Pothof was guest editor for Urban Water Journal for a special issue on air-water flows in urban drainage systems (vol 12 (6)). He has published in various peer-reviewed journals, numerous conference proceedings and national popular-scientific journals. He has 15 years of teaching and training experience in the Deltares course series Hydrodynamics of Pipeline Systems and as guest lecturer at Delft University and UNESCO-IHE.

Ivo Pothof graduated in 1995 in Systems and Control Theory at the University of Twente, faculty Applied Mathematics; his MSc thesis was awarded the KIVI price for best MSc thesis on Systems and Control.
