M.G. (Manuel) Garcia Alvarez MSc

Profile

Biography

From agricultural science to computer science. Through his professional life, he has come across many interests. In 2009, Manuel completed a BSc in agricultural science in Guatemala, his home country and immediately got involved with the collection and analysis of geographic data for monitoring vegetation and urban development. In 2011, he moved to the Netherlands and did an MSc in Geoinformatics at ITC Faculty of the University of Twente. Soon after, he joint the Geo-information processing department of that Faculty to pursue a PhD in information services for smart cities.   During his time as a PhD candidate, he founded a club for the exchange of knowledge and expertise among PhDs in 2014, called GIP rePUblic. He was also a member of the board of pITCom, the PhD association of the ITC Faculty, in 2018.  In 2019, he worked as a Research and Development Engineer for an electronics company specialised in embedded systems for UAVs, and as a Lecturer in Geo-informatics at the University of Twente. He worked along with a multidisciplinary and multicultural staff in the coordination and development of courses for a master program. In 2020, he worked on the development of e-learning materials to support the distance education program. He also joined the ICT/Innovation Department of the University of Delft as a Research Software Engineer. Besides his interest in IT and science, Manuel is a long-distance runner. He have participated many times in the Batavierenrace, a relay race of 172 Km in the Netherlands. he has run a marathon (Amsterdam 2016) and a couple of half-marathons (Enschede 2017, Amsterdam 2019).
