Biography

Peter Boelhouwer graduated in 1983 as a human geographer at Utrecht University . After his graduation he conducted a dissertation on the effects of the sale of social rented housing. After the publication of this thesis, Boelhouwer moved to OTB Research Institute for Housing, Urban and Mobility Studies of the Delft University of Technology (TUD). The first few years he mainly carried out research on the rental sector and on housing finance. Early nineties, together with Harry van der Heijden he developed a new research program on comparative housing policy, which still is an important component of the OTB research program on Housing Studies. In the years afterwards, Boelhouwer changed his research efforts to studies on home-ownership and house price developments. Together with Paul de Vries he constructed an econometric house price model for the Netherlands . Since late nineties, Boelhouwer conducted research on the methodology of the measurement of housing preferences and the determination of the willingness to move. In December 2001, Boelhouwer received a personal professorship in the field of Housing Systems at the Faculty of Architecture. Since that date Boelhouwer is also part of the department of Real Estate and Housing and responsible for the master education on housing policy.

By September 2003, he succeeded Professor Priemus as scientific director of the OTB and as director of the Research Centre for Sustainable Urban Areas at TU Delft. In the period 2003 he was the chair of the department OTB Research for the Built Environment of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment. In period 2010-2010 he was a member of the advisory council of the Ministry of Housing, physical planning and the Environment (until 2010).Since 2008 Boelhouwer is chair of the European Network for Housing research. Boelhouwer is also the editor in chief of the Journal of Housing and the Built Environment.
