In her work Tanja Herdt adopts an integrated approach to urban design, with an emphasis on urban transformation processes, urban analysis, and history and theory of the city. Central to her work is the understanding of urban design as a cultural practice that defines the quality of our living environment. She is interested in the social and environmental effects of urban transformation processes and the approaches, ideas and values that guide the urban design practice. Next to her interest in the analysis of transformation processes, she investigates the role of communality and urban governance as drivers of urban change.
Biography
Tanja Herdt is associate professor of Theory and Methods of Urban Design at TU-Delft. She studied architecture and urban design at the TU-Darmstadt, Germany, and received her doctorate at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. Before joining the faculty at TU-Delft, she was head of research for sustainable settlement design at the research centre ETH-Wohnforum at the Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich. In her practice she works on urban design and planning schemes in regard to urban densification processes. In her research she focuses on the social and environmental effects of urban transformation, the future design of housing and public space, as well as on urban governance and the idea of the common good.
Tanja Herdt is a registered architect at the Federal Chamber of German Architects and a member of the S wiss Society of Engineers and Architects (SIA). Her papers and articles have been published both in peer-reviewed specialists’ journals as well as in national and international magazines. Her work on the British architect Cedric Price, his idea of ecology and the legacy of modern functionalist planning has been published under the title The City and the Architecture of Change at Park Books, Zurich.Research interests
