Profile

Profile

Zhe Deng was born in Guilin (China), a city surrounded by water, and has developed an explicit interest in water-related researches. She started her MSc in Sanitary Engineering after a BSc in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering. During her MSc at the TU Delft, Zhe participated in the OPTI-VFA project (EU) and focused on the validation and optimization of a novel VFA probe for online VFA monitoring; and carried out an internship in Amsterdam (NL) that focused on thermal energy recovery from shower water.  In 2017, She joined the N2kWh project as a PhD candidate, and focused on the ammoniacal nitrogen recovery from protein-rich industrial wastewater.

Research

Zhe's main research activates include:

  • Overview of the whole total ammoniacal nitrogen (TAN) recovery chain, from the sources, available recovery technologies to application;
  • Identification and characterization of the potential streams;
  • Identification the rate-limiting step during anaerobic protein degradation in the presence of carbohydrate;
  • Revelation of retardation of anaerobic protein degradation by presence of carbohydrate.

Expertise

  • Anaerobic digestion
  • Protein-rich industrial wastewater treatment
  • Ammoniacal nitrogen recovery
