Pregnancy and student parent

Have you become pregnant during your degree programme? Or are you a parent who is studying? If so, you could be eligible for facilities from the university. Some form of financial support may also be possible.

Consult your academic counsellor

In the case of pregnancy, it is important to arrange an appointment with the academic counsellor on your degree programme as soon as possible. Together, you can explore whether changes will be needed to your programme. If you are a parent who is studying, it is also important to have contact with your academic counsellor. Together, you can explore whether changes will be needed to your degree programme or find out if any financial support is possible.

Financial support

Various different government allowances are available. Childcare allowance is paid by the Tax and Customs Administration. The amount you receive will depend on your situation. This includes such factors as how much support you need each month and whether or not you have an allowance partner.

A student finance allowance is available via the Education Executive Agency (DUO), the single-parent allowance, if you are caring for a child younger than age 18 and have no partner.

Internships

Is your internship scheduled for the period when you expect to give birth? Or will your internship be too physically challenging during your pregnancy? Perhaps it is difficult to combine it with childcare? In all of these cases, it is important to make clear agreements about the internship arrangements. You can explore the possibilities together with the internship host and an academic or student counsellor.
