To make pioneering research possible, Delft University Fund supports projects that require extra support and in which government funding does not (completely) provide. Yeast cells against dementia

As our life expectancy increases, more and more people are confronted with different types of dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease. How these brain diseases arise and develop is still unclear, complicating the search for effective treatment.

Algorithms against Alzheimer's

As our average life expectancy rises, an increasing number of people are developing Alzheimer’s disease. In 20 years’ time, 500,000 people in the Netherlands are expected to be affected by this brain disease, which is still incurable. Reason enough to focus on research aimed at fathoming Alzheimer’s.

Can algae replace chromium-6?

Extraordinary things are happening in Dr. Santiago Garcia’s laboratory at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. His research group is working on new solutions for existing problems in the field of aircraft materials. The group is currently achieving great success using algae in the development of a safe and environmentally friendly corrosion protector to replace the carcinogenic chromium-6.

Bacteriophages - Possible alternative to antibiotics?

What is invisible and will kill millions of people in thirty years' time? Answer: bacteria. Years of excessive use of antibiotics have enabled certain bacteria to evolve in a way that has become impossible to treat. A small group of researchers at TU Delft is working hard to find a solution.

In India's megacities, most wastewater flows unhindered through old water-drainage systems. These heavily polluted open sewers pose a serious threat to health and the environment.

Safe drinking water for all

With the new TU Delft Global Drinking Water programme Dr. Doris van Halem is accelerating the development of new drinking water technologies by stimulating early-stage field research in developing countries.
