Drs.ir. E.P. (Ilse) Verdiesen

I am a part-time PhD student and a lieutenant-colonel in the Royal Netherlands Armed Forces. I work at the Innovation Centre FRONT at the Defence Staff in The Hague and have been deployed to Bosnia and Afghanistan in the past. In my PhD research I focus on the design of Human Oversight of Autonomous Weapons to study the control mechanisms that are related to Meaningful Human Control and military decision-making processes. I conducted my graduation project on moral values related to Autonomous Weapons at the Media Lab of MIT as part of her master Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management at Delft University of Technology.

In my PhD, I analyse the concepts that are needed to ensure human oversight in Autonomous Weapon Systems and design an architecture to implement this. I am studying the design of control and human oversight mechanisms of AI systems in the military domain. In this I combine the fields of Cognitive Psychology, Moral Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence. This includes researching the moral values, responsibility, accountability and agency perception of people regarding AI systems. I also have an interest in Massive Open Online Deliberation systems to support democratic decision-making and to gain insight into people’s values on societal issues.
