L. (Longjian) Piao
Longjian Piao is a PhD candidate within the Energy and Industry group at TPM, TU Delft. He holds a B.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), China, and a joint M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from SJTU and Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
Piao is developing innovative electricity market models for DC distribution systems (DCDS). In a DCDS, the power infrastructure is shared by multiple parties with conflicting interests, so an economically efficient system operation asks for carefully designed incentive schemes. While the use of DC converters poses unique challenges to the market design, it also increases the value of prosumer flexibility. These markets may offer customers a proper incentive to reduce congestions, voltage deviations, and energy losses, or to explore the potential of local flexibility services.

DC Distribution Smart Grids (DCSMART)
DCSMART is an interdisciplinary project that aims at enabling a straightforward integration of smart grid system technologies, creation of market opportunities and stakeholders adoption through the development and implementation of dc distribution smart grids. The dc distribution smart grids will be based on modular and scalable concepts and will be validated in two demonstration sites, one in the Netherlands and one in Switzerland. Innovative smart markets and smart grid applications such as active demand side management will be implemented.
