Biography

Currently, I am an associate professor in the Cybersecurity group at TU Delft. My research mostly focuses on the cybersecurity of the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, and Data Science and explores the security requirements of connected products and services for a sustainable future. In 2012, I completed my PhD in the field of information security for vehicular ad-hoc networks.   Previously, in 2008 I pursued a MSc on Telecommunications writing a thesis on the safety and security of wireless sensor networks at Philips Laboratories in Aachen. After that, in 2010 I received an MSc in Telematics during which I studied the secure transmission of video streaming for mobile ad-hoc networks.  In the past, I was part of the Information Security Group, with the Department of Telematics Engineering at UPC, Barcelona. I also hold a Diploma in Business Studies and a Degree in Administration and Business Management from the Open University of Catalonia.

Expertise

I am an Internet security researcher with a background in information security and governance.  My research focuses on measuring and improving the resiliency and stability of the Internet and in particular the abuse of internet identifiers. My research leverages socio-technical approaches that combines big data analysis techniques and network science methods to understand cybersecurity issues. This research seeks to understand broadly how economic factors influence the choices of different actors in response to security threats. We aim at improving societal understanding of information security failures and how they should be addressed. Thus, we increase societal resilience to cybersecurity risks through more efficient and effective institutional and incentives structures. I am also passionate about data science and network security.

  • Monitor Infected devices - Project to monitor infected devices within the Netherlands. Funded by EZK
  • MINIONS - Mitigating IOT-based DDoS attacks via the DNS. Funded by DHS/NWO
  • INTERSECT - An INTERnet of SECure Things. Funded by NWO
  • 2nd Phase Hosting benchmarks - Project to develop security benchmark for the Dutch hosting sector. Funded by EZK
