The Netherlands needs to account for climate-driven flood risks when planning new housing advises the Deltaprogramma: where and how we build houses and what governments and homeowners can do to adapt to the increasing flood risks.

Many still know it as the old V&D building, later the Canadian department store Hudson's Bay moved in briefly, but the iconic building on the Grote Marktstraat in The Hague is getting an academic destination. Together with Leiden University, the Open University and Universities of the Netherlands (v/h VSNU), TU Delft will be co-occupying the Spui building in 2025. The ideal place to bring engineering knowledge closer to the heart of policy and administration, according to Behnam Taebi (Faculty of Technology ,Policy and Management TU Delft) and Jaco van Noppen (Campus Real Estate & Facility Management TU Delft).

In addition to the nomination for TU Delft’s Best Graduate, TPM’s education management team has also chosen and put in the spotlight one best graduate for each master’s program. Each best graduate received a letter of congratulations and a TU Delft trophy from the relevant program director. TU Delft Resilience professor Tina Comes played a central role in advising the EU on how to improve its role in transboundary crises. Today she handed over the synthesis of the scientific evidence on crisis management to two European Commissioners and the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

During the pre-conference of the National Transportation Science Congress, on 2 November at Het Paleis in Groningen, Sophie Buteyn, TPM alumna, was named winner of the biennial Cuperus Prize for best thesis.

Jonas Lechner is Best Graduate of TPM 2022! He now competes for the TU Delft Best Graduate award with his thesis 'Role of household climate change adaptation in reducing coastal flood risk: the case of Shanghai’. On 22 November the eight brand new engineers from the faculties presented their excellent graduation theses during the TU Delft Best Graduate Award Ceremony 2022.

People in deprived city areas tend to have less services available than inhabitants in wealthier parts. They have less access to urban infrastructure such as pharmacies, libraries, sports clubs and even public transport in their neighbourhood. Reversing this tendency is a priority for today’s policy-makers. Researchers of TU Delft have created a new online tool ‘CityAccessMap’ that can help them in doing so.

How can we ensure that the fundamental values which we consider important in the Netherlands and Europe, such as privacy, transparency and democracy, are safeguarded in a digital society? How can we make a truly positive contribution to society using AI? How can a computer drive a car or write a news story? What will the impact of all these new techniques be on our lives? And how can we steer those techniques in the right direction? At InDetail, researcher Stefan Buijsman looks at all these questions, from the functioning of algorithms to their use in society.

Several factors related to driver state negatively impact road safety, such as mobile phone distraction, fatigue and drowsiness. In the EU project i-DREAMS, different universities and businesses work together to develop a ‘safety tolerance zone’ for assessing driver state and to create a platform for personalised interventions and feedback for drivers for improving road safety. Amir Pooyan Afghari and Eleonora Papadimitriou, both researchers at TU Delft, are involved in this project.
