P. (Paula) Conde Santos Borba

Profile

Paula is a visiting PhD student from Brazil. She is a PhD candidate in the Civil Engineering Department at Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), located in São Paulo state. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and worked two years as Construction Engineer before joining the doctoral program.

Research

Her research investigates pathways for energy planning considering social, environmental, and techno-economic aspects while integrating renewable energy technologies into electricity systems.

Her study focuses on modelling the Brazilian electricity system using Calliope. Brazil may present globally relevant trade-offs. There is a need for expanding the electricity system and dealing with the scarcity of hydro resources, but the expansion through renewable energy may conflict with biodiversity, food supply, lack of infrastructure, and poverty reduction goals.
