Research on Railway Systems takes into account all aspects of railway systems from a multidisciplinary perspective. Railway transport is the safest and most energy-efficient mode of transport and its share in transport demand must increase in the next few decades to face the world’s challenges in increasing mobility, sustainable cities, energy reduction, , and providing safe, reliable and efficient transport. The theme combines internationally recognized top research ranging from fundamental scientific research to prototype implementations in practice on the topics of railway planning, operations, engineering and governance.

Railway education covers education at the level of BSc, MSc, and Professional Education, with the MSc Annotation Railway Systems as a highlight of multidisciplinary education in the fundamentals and innovative state-of-the-art of railway systems.

The theme has many external collaborations in research and education, amongst others with ProRail, NS, consultancies and contractors.
