Wood is an extremely versatile medium. In these courses, you will become more confident in using hand tools for carving, choosing which wood to use, transferring your design onto the wood, and controlling the tools you use; moving between skills, art and design-based work.
There will be an emphasis on sharpening and maintaining your tools as the basis for keeping your carving practice both enjoyable and safe. You will take inspiration from the different types of trees and their growth. You will also gain useful woodworking knowledge about different grains, heartwood and sapwood, as well as sourcing, drying and treatment processes. You will also learn how to easily identify trees, giving you a new appreciation of your local green environment.
Convex / Concave
This course introduces you to the basics of carving using hand tools - how to take away material to create hollow forms (concave) or rounded forms (convex) while working with the relationship between timber, tools and form. Starting from a panel of raw wood, you will learn how to carve and think towards using three dimensions in your design.
Based on your experience, abilities and aspirations, Teresa will guide you through the process of finding your design. No experience is needed and examples will be given. More experienced carvers are encouraged to work, or continue working, on their own project, while individual practise exercises will be given to hone your skills.
You will learn about trees and timber to inform an understanding of the properties of the material you are working with. Tool choice, sharpening and maintenance skills will set you up to become an independent carver and lead to thoroughly enjoying this craft!
