Harvey Hackathon: Data collection Event
13 september 2017 09:00 - Locatie: Delft Science Center, Mijnbouwstraat 120, 2628 RX Delft
On the 13th of September, the Delft Harvey Texas Research Team organises the Harvey Hackathon. This will be a major data-collection and problem-solving event led by Prof. dr. Bartel van der Walle that will take place at the Delft Science Center. Are you interested in learning how you can apply your knowledge to increase the understanding of disaster response at TU Delft? Join the event! Register online.
We invite students, researchers, and professionals from all backgrounds to explore how they can make impact with their expertise. During the event participants will work by choice individually or in groups to gather, analyze or visualize data from the recent Harvey disaster.

What will I do?
Topics of the groups range from twitter feed and satellite data analysis, to comparing the Harvey disaster to previous disasters. We would like to emphasize that it is not obligatory that participants have a concrete idea of how they can contribute prior to the event. During the day, there is enough room to learn from experienced researchers and peers in your group. Moreover, during the ‘Breakout Sessions’ you have the opportunity to learn about what TU Delft is already doing in this field.
Evaluating the ‘data rich’ Harvey hurricane enables student and academics to draw lesson in order to better response to disasters in the future. The Delft Harvey Research Team is interested in extending and strengthening the community of students and researchers that have interest in both short and long-time disaster response, and flood risk reduction strategies.
Why would I join?
This hack-a-thon is a fun, social and informal way for you to get more familiar with the research that is ongoing at TU Delft. Throughout the day there are many opportunities to not only gain insights from researchers at our university, but also to provide and share your own insights with them. Of course, we will share the results and the data from the hack-a-thon with all participants. Moreover, you can use the event to broaden your network and find graduation topics, internships, or a job!
When and where can I join?
The event will start at 9:00 and free coffee, tea, cookies and lunch will be provided! The event will end at 17:00 after which a free “after-hackathon-drink” is held where you can interact with many professionals to discuss your (group’s) findings! You don’t have to come all day! You can walk in whenever you want. The event will take place in the Science Center in the Mekelzaal (1st floor).
Who can join?
Everyone with a laptop who is interested! No (hackathon) experience or prior knowledge needed and a short tutorial and guidance will be provided on content and applications. The Harvey Hackathon is warmly recommended by amongst others the following study associations: S.V.T.B Curius, D.B.S.G. Stylos and Het Gezelschap "Practische Studie".
