Title: Social mix as a feature of affordable housing projects: a comparison between Italy and Netherlands
About the colloquium
Due to increasing pressure on housing markets and reduction of social rented stock, nowadays European countries are facing a rising demand for affordable and quick housing solutions which affects a widespread and differentiated audience. Both in Italy and in the Netherlands policy-makers and practitioners address this emerging need by implementing a number of innovative small scale housing projects targeting diverse social groups -such as students, young people, temporary workers and also refugees- which results in a fine-grained social mix. This presentation provides a comparative analysis of current trends in the two countries, drawing on preliminary findings from semi-structured interviews with stakeholders involved in Magic Mix and Housing Social projects, respectively in the Netherlands and Italy. It discusses stakeholders’ expectations about social mix, and shows how practitioners manage the great diversity of profiles living together in the same housing complex. The presentation highlights differences and similarities between these practices in Italy and Netherlands by adopting a comparative perspective.
