The talk will address how technology scaling and the internet of things are reshaping the future research with regard to hardware dependability, especially those relating to security, testability and reliability. Attacks are likely to increase in size and diversify in nature, hardware components are becoming less reliable and more complex, etc. All of these call for redefining the design paradigms of Integrated Circuits (ICs); future ICs should have a “personality” such that they can feel, think, act and even collaborate with other chips on the fly in order to provide the required quality of service. In addition, the talk will also discuss the need for new device technologies and new alternative computing architectures, which potentially will enable solutions for emerging applications being extremely demanding in terms of storage and computing power. Computation-in-memory based on memristive devices is an example of alternative computing notion that will be highlighted.
