Plug-and-Play Optical Waveguide Sensor Systems for Chemical and Biomedical Sensing. Promotor: Prof.dr. P.J. French (EWI).
Optical waveguide sensors based on MEMS fabrication have been widely researched for their advantages of fast response, high sensitivity, free from electric/electromagnetic influence, and miniaturization capabilities. In this research, we are aiming at developing an optical sensor for chemical and biomedical sensing, especially focusing on monitoring colorectal anastomotic leakage (AL) in patients at an early stage by detecting the existence of E. coli in drain fluid. The fact that there is a high possibility of AL and the severe results it can cause, such as mortality and morbidity, as well as the lack of an efficient device make it vital and meaningful.
This research involves structure design, material selection, and fabrication optimization, and the tests of the optical sensing system. The final optical sensing system possesses the following character: on-line, accurate, cost effective, and easy operation. By integration, it can be made into a handhold device with multiple waveguide lines to detect different bacteria simultaneously.
