WALL-E: Value, Conserve, Evolve, by Ana Pereira Roders
People can only evolve sustainably if they value resources and secure their conservation. Even when the use of resources is unforeseen. Even when innovation is to be created. This message is depicted by the animation movie WALL-E, and defines the inaugural lecture of Prof. dr. Ana Pereira Roders, Professor on Heritage and Values. Heritage and Values focuses on further understanding the values that define heritage, and how they impact the sustainability of cities. These include cultural, social, ecological, and economic values. One of the main goals is to define, develop, and test new integrated assessment frameworks to better monitor and strengthen heritage conservation worldwide.

Back to the Future: Technology and Tradition, by Uta Pottgiesser
Technology and tradition are often perceived as contradictory or as even mutually impeding. In fact, they are complementary concepts that have evolved over time and been interpreted and implemented differently. Technology has always been reflecting the intellectual framework of its time, as it is represented in science fiction movies like Back to the Future as a frame of the inaugural lecture of Prof. Dr. Uta Pottgiesser, Professor of Heritage and Technology. Heritage and Technology aims to further clarify and evaluate the role of technology in heritage. The lecture describes that the understanding of tradition as a knowledge transfer contributes to holistic approaches and intervention strategies for the conservation of heritage. Within these approaches the application of technology will be manifold instead of a one-recipe-only and is embedded into the larger integrated assessment frameworks based on values and resulting in design solutions.
