BK Talks: What have we learned?

Dick van Gameren has been the dean of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment since 1 April 2019. 
Dick van Gameren studied Architecture in Delft and graduated cum laude in 1988. For a long time, he ran his own architecture firm and in 2013 became a partner with Mecanoo Architecten in Delft. Over the years he has realised numerous projects, ranging from exhibition designs to urban-development master plans. Examples of his designs include residential buildings in IJburg and the Eastern Docklands area of Amsterdam and in the Westelijke Tuinsteden neighbourhood of the city. His design for the Dutch Embassy in Ethiopia won him the prestigious Aga Khan Award in 2007. It is just one of the many awards he has received. Recently, he won the Rijnlandse Architectuurprijs with his design for the Langebrug student housing project in Leiden. He has been Professor of Dwelling at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment since 2006, and chairman of the Architecture Department for ten years; his responsibilities include managing an international teaching and research network aimed at tackling the problem of affordable housing in rapidly expanding cities in Asia and Africa

Hey, I'm Jonas, I'm Dutch, but I'm very fortunate to have lived abroad for much of my life. I've always enjoyed expressing my thoughts creatively, be that through design, music or writing. I try to enjoy the small things; the nitty gritty details that just make sense, the little victories you have throughout a project when a bunch of complicated things come together. I also love coffee and taking pictures. If you see me, say hello!

Carola Hein is Professor of the History of Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology. She has published widely and received a Guggenheim and an Alexander von Humboldt fellowship as well as other major grants. Her books include Adaptive Strategies for Water Heritage (2019), The Routledge Planning History Handbook (2017), Uzō Nishiyama, Reflections on Urban, Regional and National Space (2017), Port Cities (2011), The Capital of Europe (2004), Rebuilding Urban Japan after 1945 (2003), and Cities, Autonomy and Decentralisation in Japan (2006), and Hauptstadt Berlin 1957-58 (1991). 

Jelle Koolwijk is a Researcher Supply chain integration and Collaborative design in the Construction industry, and Course manager Case studies at the department of Management in the Built Environment at Delft University of Technology.
As a researcher, he is involved in Uvital and VRenovate, two research projects that are funded by the Dutch Research Councel (NWO). As a course manager Case studies, he together with his students investigated the impact of COVID-19 on the effectiveness and wellbeing of office workers. Two research posters on this topic are part of the BK expo. At the end of 2021 he hopes to finish his part-time PhD on the Interplay between inter-organizational structures and interpersonal relationships in project-based organizations in the construction industry.

Dr. ir. Stavros Kousoulas is Assistant Professor of Architecture Theory in the Faculty of Architecture of TU Delft. He has studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and at TU Delft. He received his doctoral title cum laude from IUAV Venice participating in the Villard d’ Honnecourt International Research Doctorate. He has published and lectured in Europe and abroad. He is a member of the editorial board of Footprint Delft Architecture Theory Journal since 2014.

Michael Tjia is currently completing his post-master’s study at the TU Delft’s Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’s Berlage Center for Advanced Studies in Architecture and Urban Design. His practical and academic interest is at the intersection of where architecture meets graphic design and digital interfaces.

Georg Vrachliotis is Professor and Head of the Theory of Architecture and Digital Culture Group at the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft. He was dean of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Faculty of Architecture and Chair of Architecture Theory from 2014 to 2020. Vrachliotis studied architecture in Berlin and gained his PhD at the ETH Zurich in 2009. His research, exhibitions and publications focus on design, society and technology in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the exhibitions he has curated are “Fritz Haller. Architect and Researcher” at the Swiss Architecture Museum (2015), Frei Otto. Thinking by Modeling" at the  ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (2017), and "Models, Media and Methods. Frei Otto's Architectural Research” at the Yale School of Architecture (2020).
