The Segment barrier is a conceptual design for a storm surge barrier that can function as a temporary structure and expand in size to deal with the uncertainties of global mean sea level rise. The barrier consists of concrete segments that can be assembled, dismantled and reused if required.

The development of flood waves due to yearly severe storms during the hurricane season poses an increasing threat to city of New York which serves as a case study area for the development of the Segment barrier and is therefore designed to withstand the extreme wave climate conditions in this region.
