Summation of Harmonics in Offshore Wind Farm based on Probability Theory

Modern-day wind turbine with full-scale back-to-back converter is considered as a main source of harmonics in offshore wind farms. The harmonics could be amplified by the network and lead to grid code non-compliance necessitating in the installation of inflexible and expensive filters. The industry is currently using the highly criticized IEC summation rule to estimate harmonics emissions from wind farms. This thesis project is proposing a new method to estimate harmonics based on probability theory by considering the statistical nature of harmonics emitted from wind turbine converters. The method is implemented by building an offshore wind farm in DIgSilent PowerFactory and by using Python codes to perform Monte Carlo simulations. It is concluded that the accuracy of harmonic studies could be improved by including the statistical nature of the wind turbine harmonics, the variation of the grid impedance and the frequency coupling phenomenon of the wind turbine converters.
