‘Heritage and Participatory Media in the Age of Data Technology’ by Professor Elisa Giaccardi

On 14 October (10:00 CET), Professor Elisa Giaccardi will give a global lecture for UNESCO’s second online lecture series under the theme, “Presentation: Delivering Multiple Values of World Heritage”.  Her lecture, titled ‘Heritage and Participatory Media in the Age of Data Technology’, will take place virtually and will consist of a 40-minute presentation, followed by a 20-minute Q&A session.

Prior to come to IDE, a large part of Professor Giaccardi’s research in data technology was based in the field of memory practices. Her book, Heritage and Social Media: Understanding Heritage in a Participatory Culture (Routledge), is used as a textbook in many digital humanities courses and i-schools around the world. As a result of this, Elisa was asked by the preparatory office of the International Centre for the Interpretation and Presentation of World Heritage Sites under the auspices of UNESCO (WHIPIC) to give a lecture at their ongoing series.

During her lecture, Elisa will introduce the use of the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence in the context of memory practices. She will point out the transformations we may expect in participatory media, from user-generated practices of remembering to practices of remembering shared between humans and nonhumans. And this is just a glimpse, as Professor Elisa Giaccardi will undoubtedly touch upon an array of other important points that align with her lecture’s theme – ‘Heritage and Participatory Media in the Age of Data Technology’.
