HCAIS Deep Dive - Seeing Forest for the Trees: Visualising Platformization and its Governance by José van Dijck

02 juni 2022 10:30 t/m 11:30 - Locatie: NEXT Delft, Molengraaffsingel 8, 2629 JD Delft | Zet in mijn agenda

Abstract

Prof. José van Dijck will present her work on the platformization of society. She will discuss her research that resulted in the book The Platform Society. Public Values in a Connective World (2018) written with Prof. Thomas Poell and Dr. Martijn de Waal, and the latest steps in her research. Van Dijck will discuss the tree metaphor that she uses to broaden the perspective on platforms. The tree metaphor helps in analysing the dynamics that platformization brings, and how the governance of platforms should be changed. This perspective is of great relevance for AI researchers at TU Delft. It emphasizes the socio-technical implications of AI applications that are embedded in platform structure.

Speaker

José van Dijck has been Professor of Media and Digital Society at Utrecht University since 2017. She is a pioneer in media and platform studies and her research focuses on media, social media and media technologies. Before coming to Utrecht, Van Dijck was the first female president of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). Last year she received the NWO Spinoza Prize, the most prestigious award in Dutch academia. José is involved in the focus area Governing the Digital Society of Utrecht University.

Research into public values of the online world

Our social traffic often runs via online platforms. Best known are Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft. In addition to the jubilant stories and opportunities; the role that platforms play in the representation of public interests remains underexposed. Their interfaces, reputation systems, and algorithms that link supply and demand steer the design of society. With major consequences for public interests, such as the accessibility, safety and affordability of (public) transport, pluralism in journalism or the organization of education.

The Platform Society

Together with Thomas Poell and Martijn de Waal, Van Dijck wrote the book The Platform Society. Public Values in a Connective World (Oxford University Press, 2018) This book explores the workings of platforms in three social domains. The starting point is the question: how can public values be safeguarded in the platform society?

About the HCAIS Deep Dive Series

The Human-Centred AI Systems (HCAIS) Deep Dive Series is a monthly gathering hosted for and by TU Delft HCAIS community. Every month we zoom in on a different HCAIS-related challenge, methodology, technology or research niche. During these events, you can participate, learn, make connections, inspire and be inspired for new research for Human-Centred AI Systems. One of the goals of this series is to explore the key properties of human-centred AI research and education at TU Delft, as well as the transdisciplinary nature of human-centric AI. We invite all interested TU Delft PhD candidates, postdocs, and staff to join these sessions.
