Addressing the challenges of climate change requires a substantial transition at many levels of the society. Governing these transitions is not only a technical matter, but also a matter of ethical and societal considerations, many of which are often subsumed under the heading of ‘climate justice’. I this talk, I will briefly review the history of climate justice, while focusing on its current meaning for public policy. I will argue that in addition to scientific and technical uncertainties, we need to also address normative (ethical) uncertainties of climate imposed societal transitions.
Behnam Taebi is Professor of Energy & Climate Ethics and Scientific Director of the Safety & Security Institute at Delft University of Technology. He further leads TU Delft | The Hague, which is a university wide initiative with the aim to bring engineering knowledge closer to the heart of public policy and politics.
