Citizen Science Lunch: Error Detection and Quality Control of Citizen Science Data

Citizen science (CS) data are a useful source of information that complements traditional data sources. However, CS data typically cannot be used without some level of quality control. This is often done manually, which can become unwieldy for large datasets. Here, a semi-automatic quality control approach will be discussed based on quantitative probabilistic modeling of CS data errors.

The model that will be presented applies probabilistic reasoning to figure out the underlying true value based on one or more CS observations of the same event.

The approach will be illustrated using a CS dataset of rainfall observations from Nepal. The methodology can however be tailored to other CS datasets as well by adapting the modeling assumptions to the application at hand.

Our speaker, Dr. Gerrit Schoups is an Assistant Professor in the Water Management department at TU Delft. His current research focuses on probabilistic modeling to quantify uncertainty in hydrological models and to extract information from new data sources like remote sensing and citizen science data.
