Abstract: Aggregators are key stakeholders to help maintaining the stability and security of the future net-zero energy system. While in the past, stability was ensured by large, conventional, typically synchronous generators, the transition to renewable generation, such as wind and solar, asks for alternative approaches to deal with its variable, uncertain, distributed and low-inertia nature. Nevertheless, the energy system contains several sources of distributed flexibility that can be effectively used to help stabilizing the grid. This talk provides insights in how an aggregator valorizes end-users’ flexibility to limit the energy bill, stabilize the system and help in preventing congestions, now and in the future.
Short bio of the presenter: Dr. Evelyn Heylen is head of research and innovation for demand-side response and smart energy initiatives of Centrica, a UK-headquartered energy company that is operating internationally. Evelyn obtained her PhD in electrical engineering from KU Leuven, Belgium, in 2018. After a post-doc at Imperial College London in collaboration with National Grid ESO, she joined Centrica in 2020. Evelyn’s research has focused on sustainable, secure, inclusive and affordable energy systems, and how artificial intelligence can help to achieve this. She has written extensively on these topics for high-impact peer-reviewed journals. She is also a guest lecturer at Imperial College London in the field of advanced topics on control.
