Flexible Si-based LED package

Dr Henk van Zeijl (Else Kooi Laboratory) and his collaborators: PhD student Pan Liu and MSc student Robert Sokolovski developed a flexible package for LEDs. The base material is Silicon. This gives the possibility to integrate electronics in this package, like LED driver electronics. By using polymers, this package is flexible. So in a confined space e.g. a lamp, this package can be folded to realise an optimal light distribution. It is one of the first true active 3D flexible packages.

Etched cavities with placed and bonded LEDs. White is etched away silicon. Yellow is flexible polymer. The packages can be taken out of the silicon wafer by cutting the outer polymer bridges.
