Achilleas Psyllidis

I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in Spatial Data Science and Urban Analytics with the Web Information Systems group at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). I am also a Research Fellow of the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), where I lead the Social Urban Data Lab (SUDL).

Leveraging on my background in both spatial planning and data science, my current work focuses on data-driven and theory-informed approaches to characterizing places and people's activities, experiences, and interactions. I also seek to understand what processes drive their behavior. My research involves working with large, unstructured, and user-contributed geosocial data from a wide range of sources, with the aim to extract rich descriptions of human activity dynamics in urban places. To this end, I combine spatial analysis and geographic information retrieval technques to build scalable and generalizable methods and software tools that help people extract knowledge from and maximize the value of unstructured data about cities. Application domains include spatial planning, human mobility, transportation, energy consumption behavior, and facility siting.

In addition to my research portfolio, I have more than 8 years' teaching experience in urban analytics, geographic information retrieval, spatial planning, and computer-aided design, at both graduate and undergraduate levels. My multidisciplinary background bridges across the fields of spatial data science, urban and regional planning, and architectural engineering.

My commitment and dedication to research and knowledge dissemination have been rewarded with several awards for academic excellence, a prize for linked urban data solutions to public transportation, scholarships, individual research grants, and two First Class Honors (Summa Cum Laude) degrees (Highest GPA in graduating class and across Faculties).

In association with the above research line, I engage in the development of SocialGlass.
