Sand storage dams

Judith Brummelkamp graduated in 2020 from the faculty of Civil Engineering an Geosciences with an MSc in Watermanagement. For her thesis she went to Kenya to do research on the impact of sand storage dams on the water usage of local comunities. The outcomes of her research provided useful input for the upscaling of the usage of sand storage dams.

With her FAST grant Judith could cover her travel costs to Kenya in order to be able to take interviews with 50 locals about their sand storage dams. Besides the unfogettable experience Judith also gathered a lot of useful data by the fieldwork. By visiting Kenya she got good insights in the variables of water access  that are seemingly most important in the region. This knowledge will come in very useful when upscaling a technique like a sand dam in other regions.
