Recap of the 10th Relating Systems Thinking & Design Symposium

The 10th Relating Systems Thinking & Design Symposium was a big success. It took place at IDE between 2-6 November, under the theme “Playing with Tensions”. The TU Delft team, led by Mieke van der Bijl-Brouwer, welcomed ∓80 people to the faculty for the event – with an additional ∓280 attending virtually. The programme shone a light on 119 new contributions to systemic design, which included a keynote by Elisa Giaccardi.

IDE alumnus' sustainable start-up, Pieter Pot, is changing the way groceries get delivered

IDE alumnus and graduate of the SPD MSc programme, Jouri Schoemaker, is making waves in the worlds of groceries and sustainability. Jouri, who graduated from IDE in 2019, is the founder and CEO of Pieter Pot – a sustainability-focused grocery delivery start-up. It was just announced that Pieter Pot has received €9 million in funding to expand its service across Europe. This is a fantastic example of how design thinking and an entrepreneurial attitude can come together to elevate circular economies and get people talking about sustainability.

IDE at ThingsCon’s Boutiques of Salons 2021

The 2021 virtual edition of ThingsCon’s Boutiques of Salons takes place tomorrow (10 December) from 17:30 – 20:00 CET. There will be talks by IDE Professor Elisa Giaccardi and alumni Simone Rebaudengo. This year’s event will also include the student IoT Talent Awards and a digital exhibition – both of which will feature three IDE graduation projects.

Fitrim: Wheelchair power to the people

Just imagine that you just drove your wheelchair for half an hour over bumpy roads and some grassy spots, only to have your fitbit or smartphone activity tracker inform you that you took only 50 steps, burned virtually no calories and that you shouldn’t be such a couch potato. ‘There has to be a better way,’ Marit van Dijk thought. A seed grant from Delft Health Initiative and the TU Delft Sports Engineering Institute makes the difference.

On Thursday 18 November, the IPD master’s students behind the WeScope project received some fantastic news – their device had won a BraunPrize 2021. The WeScope is an open source, low-cost digital microscope designed to help train medical students in Sub-Saharan Africa. Together with the students from the Connected Creativity minor, a buzzing network event was hosted at the ID KAFEE on 2 November. Enthusiasts of creativity in innovation from various research institutes, governments, and organisations came together and were challenged to Connect to Create! Various initiatives organised by Katrina Heijne, Willemijn Brouwer, Han van der Meer, Milene Gonçalves, and the Connected Creativity students were shared during the event.

IDE researchers take the stage at Highlight Delft

From 18-20 November 2021, the fourth edition of Highlight Delft will take place across Delft, including the TU Delft campus. There will be 16 installations in which art and technology influence one another in order to experiment and discuss unexplored perspectives for our technological future. This year, two IDE researchers and one IDE graduate will have their work on display at the event. So don’t miss out on the following installations: IDE researcher Frederik Ueberschär with his Landshapes project, IDE Assistant Professor Doris Aschenbrenner and German musician Bruno Kramm with their Pandemic Robot Orchestra, and IDE graduate Tim van Dortmont with his Growing Light project. Acht beste afstudeerders van de TU Delft presenteerden online hun excellente afstudeerscriptie. De prestigieuze titel TU Delft Best Graduate 2021 ging naar ir. Zhuo-ming Shia, afgestudeerd aan de Faculteit Bouwkunde.

Eduscope shortlisted for Dubai Global Grad Show

The UBUNTU Eduscope, developed by one of IDE’s Advanced Embodiment Design (AED) teams, has been shortlisted for the Global Grad Show in Dubai. The UBUNTU Eduscope is an affordable, locally producible digital microscope for education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The concept of Eduscope is part of the NWO INSPiRED project.

Nieuwe samenstelling OKIO, spreekbuis voor staf en studenten

In haar rol als wettelijk inspraakorgaan vertegenwoordigt de OKIO alle medewerkers en studenten van deze faculteit, in haar gesprek met de opleidingsdirectie en faculteit. In sommige gevallen gaat het om advies, in andere gevallen om instemming. De OKIO (opleidingscommissie Industrieel Ontwerpen) is samengesteld uit verschillende vertegenwoordigers van de opleidingen IO, DfI, SPD en IPD, voor helft bestaand uit medewerkers (vijf man/vrouw) en voor de andere helft uit studenten.

Minister of OCW visits Green Intensive Care Room

On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Green Intensive Care Room at Convergence Square. During her extensive tour of the facility, IDE Associate Professor JC Diehl, alongside Prof. Diederik Gommers, and Dr. Nicole Hunfeld from Erasmus MC, presented their work and findings to her. They explained that (on average) seven bags of waste per patient, per day were being produced at the Intensive Care Unit.

On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Convergence - a collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus MC, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. IDE professor Maaike Kleinsmann, alongside her colleagues Eveline Crone (Erasmus University), and Vincent Jaddoe (Erasmus MC), presented their new Convergence flagship project Healthy Start to Minister van Engelshoven.

James Dyson Award – IDE alumnus makes it into global top 20

IPD alum Jerry de Vos’ Plastic Scanner has been selected for the James Dyson Award’s Global Top 20. Jerry’s Plastic Scanner, alongside the other 19 inventions, was chosen from over 2,000 entries. Now that he is in the top 20, he has the chance to become the global winner and receive £30,000 to support the next stages of their inventions.

TU Delft & MIT publish article in Urban Studies

IDE Assistant Professor Achilleas Psyllidis, PhD candidate Roos Teeuwen, and Professor Alessandro Bozzon, in collaboration with MIT Senseable City Lab, and AMS Institute, have written and published an article on ‘Cities and infectious diseases: Assessing the exposure of pedestrians to virus transmission along city streets.’ The article is published in Urban Studies (a top-tier journal in the field), under a gold open access license.

Iedereen kan nu batterijloze apparaten bouwen

Vorig jaar onthulden computerwetenschappers van de TU Delft en Northwestern University (Illinois, VS) ’s werelds eerste batterijloze Game Boy, die eindeloos speelplezier mogelijk maakt door energie te halen uit zowel zonne-energie als uit de kinetische energie die nodig is om de verschillende knopjes in te drukken. Hetzelfde team heeft nu een platform gelanceerd waarmee makers, hobbyisten en beginnende programmeurs hun eigen batterijloze elektronische apparaten kunnen maken, aangedreven door sporadisch uit de omgeving geoogste energie.
