Reproducing the material appearance of Fine Art artefacts using 3D scanning and 3D printing technology

Creating lifelike reproductions of historical paintings using 3D scanning and 3D printing technology, as a step towards full control over material appearance (colour, gloss, texture and translucency) in 3D printing

Goals of the project

New advances in 3D printing technology opens up opportunities to influence all aspects of the material appearance in 3D printed objects: not just colour printing, but also controlling surface topography, gloss and translucency. This, combined with scanning techniques from the computer graphics industry to create lifelike renderings and animations, can be used to make accurate reproductions of unique and valuable objects.

The goal of the project is to:

  • Develop a 3D reproduction system capable of producing lifelike reproductions of Fine Art artefacts
  • Understand which parameters of 3D reproduction system are important for the reproduction of gloss and surface texture
  • Understand how the parameters of the 3D reproduction system are related to the visual perception of material appearance
