Biography

Dr. Gerd Kortuem is Professor of Internet of Things at the Design Engineering department, faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at Delft University of Technology. He also holds an associate professorship at The Open University in the UK, where he was deputy-director of the Milton Keynes smart city project MK:Smart between 2013-2016.

His research focuses on the Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Human Computer Interaction and Data Science and explores the design of connected products and services for a sustainable future. In 2002 he completed his PhD in the field of wearable computing and has since then investigated technologies for smart workplaces, public transport, domestic micro-grids, and community energy with companies such as BP, BT, E.On, and Tech Mahindra. 

Gerd has worked in various roles in the software industry (IBM, Apple and an internet start-up), and advises SMEs and startups on developing data-driven products and business solutions. He has taught Software Entrepreneurship at a number of universities (including at Saïd Business School at Oxford University) and was co-lead of a FutureLearn MOOC on Smart Cities.  

Gerd holds a PhD and MSc from the University of Oregon, USA and a Diplom from Stuttgart University, Germany. He is an associate partner at strategic consultancy Fronesys Inc. and founder of the Urban Data School, an initiative to promote data literacy education.
