Dr. Assen, J.J.R. van

Jan Jaap van Assen is a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, as well as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Perceptual Intelligence Lab of Delft University of Technology. Here he investigates the perception of collective flow—complex motion patterns of, for example, flocks of birds—using psychophysics, computer graphics, statistical modelling and machine learning.

Academic Background

Jan Jaap completed a two-year post-doc at NTT in Japan and received his PhD Summa Cum Laude in 2018 for his research on the perception of liquids with Roland Fleming at Giessen University, Germany. During his bachelor and master studies, Jan Jaap completed both engineering and design courses related to human computer interaction at various Dutch universities, including TU Delft. Jan Jaap is fascinated by the power and flexibility of the human visual system and the cognitive processes it relies on.
