Qiang Liu is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, under the supervision of Prof. dr. ir. Jansen, K.M.B. and dr. Ghodrat, S.
My research is to bridge the gap between haptic interaction design and smart materials in the field of HCI. It mainly focus on how haptic device, as a kind of assistant equipment, help users complete their tasks successfully with good haptic experience when their visual and auditory is fully or mostly utilized. The research will develop some empirical mathematical models of smart materials (e.g. shape memory alloy, shape memory polymer) and design toolkits/guidelines of different haptic types (e.g. pinch, stroke, squeeze, etc.).
I have an Industrial Design background. I received my Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree after my undergraduate education, and got a Master of Fine Arts degree in Hunan University. In a business cooperative project during my postgraduate career, I learned about smart materials by chance and became interested in the field. This drove me to look for groups which working on emerging materials, and finally I follow Prof. dr. ir. Jansen, K.M.B. and dr. Ghodrat, S. here.
