Academic Background
Prof. Pieter Desmet is full professor of âDesign for Experienceâ at the Department of Industrial Design Engineering. His main research interest is in understanding why and how design evokes emotion, and how design can contribute to the well-being of individual users and communities. He supervises a research group that studies various aspects of user experience, and chairs the âDelft Institute of Positive Designâ (see www.diopd.org). This institute aims to initiate and stimulate the development of knowledge that supports designers in their attempts to design for human flourishing. Desmet is board-member of the International Design and Emotion society (see www.designandemotion.org), and has published over 80 scientific (journal) papers and book chapters; edited three books, three special issues, and two conference proceedings on a variety of aspects of experience-driven design.

Beroepservaring
- 2023-present: initiating and leading a research-through-design co-creation study (N=54) (e.g., iterative prototyping and user test workshops: questionnaires, usability testing, focus groups) across the Netherlands, UK, and China to generate and evaluate a web-based digital health design guide for improving the digital patient experience.
- 2023-present: Collaborating on a mixed-method, cross-sectional, observational design study (e.g., focus group) to understand Chinese immigrantsâ perspectives, expectations, and experiences on future medical care and advanced care planning based on a board game.
- 2023-present: Collaborating on a patent review study to investigate the state-of-the-art of information and communication technology and human-computer interaction design in driving digital mental health innovation.
-
- 2021-present: initiating and conducting a prospective observation study (N=96) in a clinical setting to investigate the digital patient experience of VR distraction for pain management when patients receive non-facial wound care at Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam.
- 2021-present: designing and conducting a patient survey (N=171) to investigate the digital patient experience of a digital intake tool in the Dutch colorectal cancer screening program in participants with a positive FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test) who are referred for colonoscopy.
- 2021-present: supervising, advising, and coaching eight master graduation projects and three master and bachelor courses.
- 2020-present: servicing as reviewers for seven journal papers and one conference.
