Variational Multiple Shooting: Theory and Applications

Develop a novel tool for high-fidelity low-thrust trajectory optimization using a direct multiple shooting  technique. To enhance the method's accuracy, the method will employ a variational approach for computing the first and second derivatives by numerical propagation of the variational equations. To do so, an external library will be created containing the set of variational equations for the forces acting in the space environment. The software language shall be C++ to improve the method's speed and to ensure possible compatibility with SMART/TUDAT. The multiple shooting tool will be coupled with different low-fidelity methods (shape-based, semi-analytical, etc.) for first-guess generation. Finally, its performance and accuracy will be assessed in comparison to modern approaches found in literature and will be applied to test cases (probably a CubeSat mission, and GTOC9).
