Weather Route Optimization for Oceanic Vessels
In the wake of the economic crisis of 2008, the shipping industry changed from a very profitable industry to a struggling one, requiring optimization in every aspect involved in the industry to survive. One thing to optimize is the routes vessels sail, aiming at a reduction in fuel usage to both save expenses and greenhouse gas emissions.
To find the optimal routes, weather forecasts and real-time vessel performance data is used. To increase the fuel savings even further, monthly averaged weather conditions, based on 15 years of hindcast data, are included in the process and the optimal blend of forecast and monthly averaged weather is determined. With this optimal blend, the amount of fuel that can be saved by application of weather route optimization can be estimated.
