A method for the conceptual design of hybrid-electric aircraft
The growing concern with global emissions and the continuous expansion of the air-transport sector has brought many international agencies to elaborate aggressive emissions reduction targets for the future. It is expected that improvements in conventional technologies and architectures will not be enough to satisfy these challenging goals, but the partial electrification of the propulsion system is an approach that could feasibly close the gap in the desired time-frame.
As part of this project, a method for the design of hybrid-electric powertrain architectures has been developed.The method allows for a rapid exploration of the vast design space integrating together mission requirements and constraint evaluations typical of the conceptual design process. The objective of the research is to evaluate the impact of the hybrid-electric propulsion systems on selected key performance indicators. This is achieved by selecting three promising architectures and analysing the effect of the methods parameters on the flight performances.
