An underwater surface pressure measurement technique based on compliant coatings

Surface pressure measurements are a crucial part of aerodynamic/hydrodynamic analysis and are essential when studying complex flow phenomena. Although pressure-sensitive paint has become established as a non-intrusive field measurement technique for applications in air, a comparable method does not yet exist for usage underwater.

In this exploratory study, a novel compliant coating-based pressure measurement technique is developed and validated against pressure sensors using a submerged impinging jet setup. Free-surface synthetic schlieren (FSSS) is used to extract the coating deformations from which the pressure fluctuations on the coating surface are obtained through a pressure-deformation scaling from past literature [1]. The results suggest that the existing scaling based on turbulent boundary layer flows overestimates the pressure fluctuations and a new scaling factor is proposed. In addition, particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used to quantify the impact of coating deformations on the surrounding flow.
