Sensor Fusion in Autonomous Spaceflight for Asteroid Observation Missions

In deep space navigation, it is difficult to navigate orbits around asteroids, due to their highly irregular gravity field. Autonomous navigation can increase the safety and accuracy for orbit proximity operations. For the implementation of autonomous navigation, the onboard GNC should be able to accurately estimate the attitude and relative position of the spacecraft. A sensor fusion model is proposed, comprising an IMU, star tracker and laser ranger as navigation sensors. State estimation is then performed using an EKF. It is concluded that the proposed model is sufficiently accurate for position and attitude estimation.
