Viability assessment of satellite navigation filters for close-proximity operation

The thesis presents two satellite navigation filters as potential alternatives for an Extended Kalman filter (EKF). It aims to identify the viability for application in close-proximity operation and to document mismatches between simulation and hardware testing. This serves as a blueprint for future projects to facilitate the move from theoretical into practical testing. The filters were tested in a simulation tool and in a hardware-in-the-loop facility. Different test cases were used and assessment criteria for close-proximity operation were determined. Both new filters showed potential to outperform the EKF in estimation accuracy. The hardware tests could not conclusively confirm this, where estimate divergence and differing estimation accuracy were observed. Multiple challenges unobserved in the simulation test were determined. The new filter modes need further improvement to become alternatives for the EKF. Challenges encountered when moving from simulation testing to hardware testing were highlighted as reference for future projects.
