Numerical Assessment of Directional Stability and Control with Tip-Mounted Propellers

A numerical tip-mounted propeller model is applied to a non-linear flight mechanics model. This flight mechanics model is then evaluated for static and dynamic stability, and control forces. A typical tip-mounted propeller design is sized, and consecutively analysed to evaluate the impact on a typical design. Results indicate that the influence of tip-mounted propellers on static and dynamic stability can be used to enhance the stability, or decrease the size of the vertical tailplane, and can match the reference rudder performance in certain flight phases.
