Novel Transmission Thermal Model
A thermal model of a novel transmission in an off-shore wind turbine was created, also referred to as a as a compound planetary friction drive. The model uses relations which describe the heat generation and transfer in the transmission. Using those relations, a nodal network of the transmission was created. Simultaneously solving the nodal network resulted in the steady-state temperature throughout the transmission’s cross-section. The model was validated by comparing the heat-map it generated to a test with a scaled model of the transmission and a third-party software. This resulted in a difference in steady-state temperature between the results, caused by the model not incorporating conduction to the external environment. Once conduction was removed, the model could be validated. The model was then used to predict the steady-state temperature of the wind turbine transmission. It was concluded that lubrication plays a critical role in the steady-state temperature of the transmission.
