Semi-Analytical Modelling of VAT Laminates with Cut-Outs
Using Variable Angle Tow laminates, the stiffness and strength properties of laminates can be continuously varied across the laminate. These laminates can outperform traditional straight fibre laminates in cases of non-uniform distributed internal loads. Cases of particular interest are laminates under buckling conditions or with cut-outs. With the aim of finding solutions with reduced computational cost, a semi-analytical method is developed to determine the pre-buckling and buckling behaviour of a VAT laminate with a cut-out. The method uses the Enriched Rayleigh-Ritz method mixing stress- and displacement-based approximations, enriched with additional trial functions to account for the cut-out. Furthermore, Gauss-Legendre quadrature integration is used to determine the energy functional derivatives over the laminate domain. The method shows good agreement with results obtained with Finite Elements, both for the pre-buckling stresses and buckling eigenvalues and eigenmodes.
